Rare Buddhist Flower Found Under Nun’s Washing Machine - A rarely seen Buddhist flower, which blossoms every 3,000 years, has been discovered under a nun’s washing machine. The Udumbara flower was found in the home of a Chinese nun in Lushan Mountain, Jiangxi province, China. The rare Youtan Poluo or Udumbara flower, which, according to Buddhist legend, only blooms every 3,000 years, measures just 1mm in diametre.OK, maar waarom is die bloem Boeddhistisch? In de Lotus Soetra wordt de zeldzaamheid van een 'irl' Boeddha vergeleken met de zeldzaamheid van Udumbara bloempjes:
All Buddhas come into the world
But rarely, and are hard to meet;
And when they appear in the world,
It’s hard for them to speak the Dharma.
Throughtout countless ages, too,
It’s difficult to hear this Dharma.
And those who can hear this Dharma--
Such people too, are rare,
Like the udumbara flower,
In which all take delight,
Which the gods and humans prize,
For it blooms but once in a long, long time.
Maar dit stuk uit de Lotus Soetra heb ik uit het wikipedia artikel over een vijgeboom gehaald. Het gaat duidelijk niet over 1mm kleine bloempjes. Toch, als je op 'udumbara' zoekt krijg je allemaal plaatjes! Ze mogen dan maar eens in de 3000 jaar bloeien, ze zitten blijkbaar overal! In aziatische landen, maar ook in australie en de VS. In 2007 bleek het al eens 'breaking news'.
Udumbara was first discovered on a gold-coated copper statue of Tathagata at a temple in South Korea. Following the discovery, Udumbara had been found in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Sydney and Brisbane in Australia and some cities in North America. To one’s surprise, this type of flower, regarded as fortune and luck, can grow on the surface of steel, glass, rubber, fruits and plants, regardless of the substance of the surfaces and whatever the season may be. Its traces of growth and blossom have been found at monasteries and common peoples’ homes.
Da's wel apart, he? Dat het overal groeit, en kan groeien op kaal staal? En dan opeens dit artikeltje dat een bruut einde maakt aan de veronderstelling dat we bijna een ECHTE boeddha ontmoet zouden hebben... Het bloempje blijkt een eitje van een 'lacewing' mug te zijn en ze zitten op dunne steeltjes om te voorkomen dat de allesvretende larven elkaar kannabalistisch te lijf gaan.
Wat een wonderlijk verhaal :). En als je een ECHTE Boeddha tegenkomt, die ook nog eens de Dharma wil spreken en dat jij dat dan ook nog eens hoort... Nou, dan eet je hem maar op. Of beter poetsen.
